Critical decisions regarding federal funding, including funding for public education, will be made this week. With the current funding for federal agencies set to expire on Friday, December 9, Congress must act quickly to pass legislation to ensure continuity in funding and operations of the federal government. It’s time to speak up to make sure lawmakers maximize investments in key Prek-12 public education programs such as Title I grants for disadvantaged students and special education under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Dear Official,

I am a constituent and writing on behalf of my local school district regarding Fiscal Year 2017 Appropriations.  As you are aware, the current Continuing Resolution (H.R. 5325) is expiring this week. The investments in our students provided through FY2017 appropriations for programs such as Title I grants for disadvantaged students, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) grants for students with special needs, and others are critical to the success of our students, schools and community.

We urge your strong support and vote in favor of a subsequent appropriations measure that will provide the continuity needed for our students and schools.  Education services that support local and state efforts to close achievement gaps through tutoring, curriculum development, early intervening services, individualized education plans, and more are funded through FY2017 appropriations.  Therefore, ensuring the continuance of these supports is a key priority for our district and state, as well as school districts across our nation.  For example, Impact Aid funding for schools that educate students whose parents/guardians are enlisted in our nation’s Armed Forces and those who reside on Indian trust lands will expire December 9, unless a subsequent appropriations measure is enacted.

Congress’ swift action is needed regarding appropriations for education and related programs.  Your leadership and continued support for our students, school district and community is greatly appreciated.
