App stores like Apple’s have a monopoly on how you download apps that do everything on your phone – from checking email, to streaming music, to playing games. With this complete control over the mobile world, app store gatekeepers charge a sky-high 15-30% “app tax,” and even prohibit apps from communicating directly with their own customers.
But now, Senator Blumenthal, Senator Blackburn, and Senator Klobuchar have introduced a bipartisan bill that will address these unfair and anti-competitive practices and open the app marketplace to greater innovation, choice, and freedom. Representatives Johnson, Buck, and Cicilline have introduced a House companion of the bill as well.
The Open App Markets Act will:
- Let users to choose their default apps, easily delete pre-installed apps they don’t want, and install their choice of app store on their own devices
- Allow developers to communicate directly with their own customers, including to offer refunds and discounts
- Promote greater freedom and choice for American app developers and consumers
Ask Congress to pass the bipartisan Open App Markets Act to prohibit anti-competitive practices in the app marketplace, fix the broken app economy, and give consumers more choice and freedom.
